Lihue Area Guide

Here on Kauai when you hear people talk about “Town” or “The BIG City”, you instantly know they are talking about Lihue.

Costco, cheap gas and Home Depot are likely the top three reasons folks head to Lihue if you live elsewhere on island. But Lihue has tons more to offer than gas and groceries! It’s got a couple of golf courses, a wide range of housing options from studio condos to cliff houses with endless views. Puhi just south of Lihue has a wonderful YMCA with a killer lap pool. There are massive amounts of restaurant options including the famous Duke’s Kauai, Café Portofino, the local Kauai Beer Co, and more! Nawiliwili harbor and Kalapaki beach offer many options for you including fishing tours from the small boat harbor, canoe and sailing clubs, beach volleyball, and surf/sup lessons to name a few.

There are tons of vacation rental options in Lihue, but for my money I’d stay at the Kauai Lagoons. There you have golf, hotel, condos mixed with waterways that come in from the ocean and wind / weave throughout the 450 acre property. It’s almost like a large scale version of what the coco palms must have been back in the hay-day. It’s complete with views of black mountain, Nanini Lighthouse and plenty of golf. It’s just a short walk down to a great little surf break at Kalapaki beach good for SUP, longboarding or shortboard. It’s also within reach of shopping and dining at Nawiliwili where you should make sure to catch your favorite sporting events at JJ’s Broiler.

You could also head over to the historic Kilohana Plantation! A historic landmark, Kilohana Plantation offers guests a glimpse into Kauai’s past combined with assorted island-style activities, dining and shopping. The finest example of plantation era architecture on Kauai, the restored 1930’s manor now acts as host to Gaylord’s restaurant, Mahikō Lounge and a selection of shops and galleries. The plantation grounds feature rum tasting at Koloa Rum Co, estate tours aboard Kauai Plantation Railway, or just take a stroll! See a piece of Kauai’s history while experiencing the best of the island today!
